Maria Brandl is a research lead scientist in the Produce Safety and Microbiology Research Unit at the Western Regional Research Center of the ARS in Albany, CA. She conducts research on the ecology of human enteric pathogens on leafy vegetable crops in relation to food-borne illness outbreaks associated with produce. She received her PhD in Plant Pathology at UC Berkeley.
Luisa Cheng obtained her graduate degree in Microbiology from UCLA and did post-doctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Dan Portnoy at Berkeley. She is currently a scientist at the USDA in Albany and does research on the in vivo toxicology of biological toxins.
Maureen C. Whalen received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1986 in plant physiology with Lew Feldman. She went on to do a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular plant pathology with Dr. Brian Staskawicz at UC Berkeley. In 1990, she joined the faculty at Colby College in Waterville, Maine as the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Biology. Dr. Whalen returned to UC Berkeley as a Visiting Research Plant Biologist in 1992, and then joined the Biology faculty at San Francisco State University (SFSU) as an Associate Professor in 1995. She was promoted to Full Professor in 1999. At SFSU Dr. Whalen was Project Director of the NIH CCSF/SFSU Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program, from 1996 to 2002, and of the NIH SFSU MBRS SCORE Program, from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, she became a Research Leader of the Crop Improvement and Utilization Unit at the Western Regional Research
Center in the ARS-USDA.
